Every Year
Every year between February and March, my company does yearly reviews. Every year, I set up a date with my manager to go over my review. Every year, the date comes. Every year, I agonize with a stomach ache ready to throw up. This year was no different.
The date, Wednesday, February 17th. The time, 2:30. The stomach ache, started at 8am. My goals are written out. My review of myself is complete. I dock myself a bit, cause I have to say what's wrong with me before someone esle can. Doesn't everyone do that?
The time has come. I walk into my manager's office and she closes the door. (insert erie music) We chat about my husband's recent job loss. She, apologizes (as if it's her fault he lost his job). She pulls out my goals sheet from last year. I met all but one. She pulls out my goal sheet for this year. We chat about the goals. She rewrites a couple of them. I sign. She pulls out my *gasp* *lump in throat* peer reviews. She reads.
"Jolene is (insert erie music again) well organized, detail oriented, makes checklists and uses them, helps the parents feel at ease and welcomed on the NICU (newborn intensive care unit), she is a team player, flexible, helpful, pleasant to work with, great communicator, and we enjoy working with her." Manager, "your co-workers really like working with you." *sigh* Manager, "the only negative thing on here is you don't smile or seem welcoming at times when someone walks on the unit. But only ONE person said that, so I'm not concerned." *major sigh* Manager, "oh, and that incident last week, I told them you are an excellent HUC (Health Unit Coordinator), very detailed oriented, and just had a very busy night that night." *smile* *major sigh again* Manager, "I'm giving you a commendable rating (2nd to role model) and a raise." ***Thank you, Jesus! (Note to self, sometimes you need to hear how great you really are and next time, don't dock yourself.)***
Manager, "how is that adorable daughter of yours..."
