Mr. Jerk!
I'd like to introduce you to an enemy of Jonathan's, Mr. Jerk or Jerky, whichever you choose. Last week was Jonathan's first Cognative Behavioral Therapy session and it went quite well. I should drop back a bit though...
Jonathan's diagnosis at this time is Separation Anxiety. When he is away from us, he has fear of losing us or us losing him. He freaks inside thinking we will die or someone will take him. I'm sad to announce, I put the fear there. You know, "If you walk away from me, someone could take you." "Watch out for cars, you could get hit and could die." You know...scare them to death and they will listen! Yah, not good parenting tactics, but my kids haven't been taken, nor do they wonder in the street. All kidding aside, it can be very serious! The anxiety creeps up in other areas too, like failure. You know, the house has to be spotless, everything in order for me. For him, it causes him a fear of failure and thus anxiety over the thought of making a mistake. It's very sad to think your doing a great job parenting and then, bam, realize...perhaps I've been a bit extreme. Wait, no, not me!
Ok, ok, so Mr. Jerk...Jonathan was asked to draw a picture of the "monster" that comes out when the icky feelings creep up. He drew this "thing" as big as the sheet of paper. Colored it and named it...Jerky! Quite fitting, really. So, Jonathan's goal this week is to be a detective and write down when, where, how, and why Jerky shows up. HE has been given control and HE is lovin it. Although, Mr. Jerky only showed his ugly head once this week!
Stay tuned for future updates on...Mr. Jerk!
Jonathan is also participating in Title One group for help in reading and reading comprehension. His behavior at home and school, since making a few changes, has improved tremendously! We are finally getting answers and it makes a world of difference.
